2027 Dates Coming Soon

Throughout the year, the Casual Union of Working Poets gathers in live sessions which create a gentle but consistent rhythm—a reminder that poetry belongs within the weave of ordinary life.

We come together to make new work, to think about how poems shape our lives, and to explore poetic process as a way of being in the world.

The Casual Union exists to encourage an ongoing practice and union members participate as they are able, with many returning year after year because the collective spirit sustains their attention, energy, and delight in making poems.

Why Join

Because poetry thrives in community. Because writing can be solitary, but it need not be lonely.

Because you want to keep your practice alive between your other commitments, and you have friends here.

Because you belong here, with us, a poet (or secret poet) among poets.

Because you write more when you come to workshop.Because you often feel better when you write. Because both of these things feel good.

This process gives meaning to your life, and the things you create are part of your purpose as a creative human.

Our Casual Union offers a steady, trustworthy place to land—somewhere you can return to your writing and your people. You don’t need to prepare, perform, or produce anything in particular; you simply need to attend as you’re able, with your curiosity and love of the art. The beautiful result is always more than one might expect.

The Year Ahead

In 2027, the union will again follow a seasonal arc, paying attention to how our individual creative rhythms are in conversation with those that exist all around us, and especially in the natural world. Each month we will look at a poem that helps us tune into elements of this unfolding process.

Together, we’ll consider what it means to tend our work as one might tend a living landscape — resting, preparing, planting, and harvesting the fruits of sustained devotion.

Members can look forward to readings, writing provocations, and inquiries into how a creative practice is also a form of care that inevitably extends beyond the self, to nurture shared spaces and values, thereby contributing to a better possible world for all of us.

Tuition for the year:

Member Benefits

A full year of creativity and community, hosted by Holly Wren Spaulding, on Zoom.

Monthly Deep Writing Workshops (75 minutes each) — Gather each month to write together in real time. Guided by Holly, this is a gentle time to draft new work, with space to reflect on process. Members are warmly encouraged to bring something to eat if this falls during their lunch hour. Come to as many as you can.

Monthly Open Studio (60 minutes each). Bring your work in progress; use the time and space to move it forward. Reading it aloud toward the end of the hour is encouraged but not required. This is a gently facilitated co-working space. Come see how much is possible in just one hour of devoted work.

Project: A Poet's Almanac. Write with us each month—a poem, prose fragment, or field note. By December, you'll have a collection that documents your attention and observations across the seasons. In the fall, we'll have two workshops focused on how to curate a small collection, and how to revise poems within the context of an emerging body of work, and you'll have a protomanuscript.

Member Reading — Celebrate the end of the year by reading to each other in our December workshop.

Visioning Workshop — As the year draws to a close, we'll spend an hour in December, during Studio Time, articulating a creative vision for the year to come. It can be as light hearted or serious as you want it to be.

Craft Focus — Six times during the year, we will do a close reading of a poe , expanding our sense of possibility, and deepening our understanding of poetic craft.

Gentle Accountability, Warm Community — The Casual Union keeps your writing life moving forward, even when other demands make it challenging to sustain a steady practice.

Access to the Archive — Enjoy over 85 archived recordings from past union workshops.

The Art of Close Reading

At six key points during the year, we’ll look a single poem, reading it closely—as writers—attending to its music, imagery, structure, and movement—so that we may better understand how poems are made, and in turn, expand what’s possible in our own work.

Rather than surveying entire books as we did in 2025 (recordings are available in the archive), we’ll linger with individual poems—learning to see how they work from the inside out. From each close reading, a new piece of your own writing will begin to take shape.

This is not a lecture series but a shared exploration. Our time together will be collaborative and alive—part study, part discovery, part making.

By the end of the year, you’ll have a deeper understanding of poetic craft, a renewed sense of wonder for what language can do, and a collection of new work born from your close attention.
